How to keep your Rugs new for years ?

Rugs are the silent decorators of our home. There mere presence add a charm to the whole ambience. There are different rugs for different areas of home. While shaggy rugs are for bedroom and living room, outdoor rugs are for beautifying your patio.
However, time takes a toll on everything. With time, your bright and beautiful rugs become dull and lusterless. So much so that they become barely noticeable. But with proper care, you can keep them new for long.
Before going through the dos and don’ts, it’s important to understand that rugs are not just another upholstery item. They’re an investment. To maintain their aesthetic appeal, it’s crucial to care for them properly. Rugs Beyond hereby gives all the rugs owners the tips to keep rugs looking fresh and plush.
·         Turn or rotate your carpet four times a year. This will evenly distribute the wear and tear over the entire surface. If you don’t, just one corner of your rug will fade while the rest of the unused part stays new.
  • Avoid placing your expensive rugs in the high traffic areas. Place them in one side of a room and not in doorways.
  • You can use protective plastic strips to protect the corners and sides of carpet. Also, underside of rugs is susceptible to get damaged by spills and water absorption. This can be tedious at times. It’s best to keep rugs away from places prone to water spills and water standing.
  • Avoid walking in heels over your rugs. Stilettoes can cause a havoc on your rug by poking in holes. It weakens the weave of rugs and also makes them look torn and shabby.
  • If your rugs are placed beneath your sofa in living room, either keep shuffling your rug from here to there or keep repositioning your furniture. Sofa legs crush the rugs and make permanent indentations on the surface.
  • Do not, and I repeat, do not place your valuable rugs in direct sunlight. Apart from outdoor rugs, premium expensive rugs should not be placed in an area that receives direct sunlight. If washes, it should be hung in shade. There are two reasons for that. One being that sunlight causes weakening of rug fibers and cause them to tear before they’re supposed to. Also, the UV rays cause fading of your rugs and make them extremely dull in no time.
  • Even dirt, when accumulated for long in your carpets, can cause wear and tear. Therefore, it’s important to vacuum your rugs on a daily basis. To avoid fiber breakage by pulling, vacuum in the direction of the pile. This will give a very even and uniformed look to the fibers. Uneven fibers mar the beauty of your rug. Avoid vacuuming on spills. Refer to manufacturer’s instruction on how to wash a particular rug. Some may require dry cleaning, like some premium woolen and silk rugs, while some can be washed using gentle liquid detergents.
  • Don’t use brush to comb out the tangled fringes. In fact, if you shake your rug properly, you might be able to get rid of the tangles. Brushing can break the pile and make your carpet look unattractive. Tugging on fringes can pull them out of your rug as well.
  • It’s important to save your rugs from insects as well. Especially natural rugs made of wool and silk are more susceptible to infestation by moths, spiders, and crickets.
  • Twice a year, check your rugs thoroughly and look if there are any holes, insect droppings, and webbing. If you see these signs, it’s time for thorough cleaning.
  • To free your carpet of insects, vacuum on both sides of carpet. Use the upholstery attachment for the same and cover the nozzle with a small piece of nylon stocking. Repeat two times a week. Don’t keep your rugs near windows and in doorways.
These are the ways you can keep your valuable rugs beautiful for long.
