What are Hand-Tufted Rugs?

Hand Tufted Rugs are not to be confused with hand knotted rugs for both are quite different in the way they are manufactured and designed. Hand tufted rugs are much affordable and require less time in making which also adds to cost effectiveness. But why is it different? The answer lies in the making technique.
In HandTufted Rugs, wool of high quality, (same as used in hand knotted rugs) is made into loops and pushed through a backing which is imprinted with the desired design. This is done by using a 'tufting gun'. After the backing is filled thoroughly with loops, scrim which is like a perforated sheet is applied with latex glue. After this dries, protective cloth backing is applied to protect the underside of rug. In the end, shearing of rug is done to cut all loops of rug to bring out the design.
So basically, fixation with latex is done to keep the loops in place instead of knots. This is the only difference between hand tufted and hand knotted rugs. Both being made of high quality wool, they look and feel the same.
Hand TuftedRugs are highly durable. They can withstand high traffic and can last up to 15 to 20 years depending upon quality and usage. They look beautiful and elegant. Only issue being that they are not really a collector's master piece. But they serve their purpose completely.
